Rapid development of new Drupal voting site

  • MOBO

About the Project

In September 2015 we were asked to design, build, host and launch a new voting website for the MOBO Awards from scratch.  In 12 working days!

Our user experience-led approach resulted in:

  • Over 250,000 votes – 3.5 times the number from previous years.
  • Almost 60,000 unique voters
  • On average 4.3 votes cast per voter

In 12 working days we successfully:

  • Defined the user experience, information architecture and design.
  • Built the site in Drupal.
  • Tested and launched in time for the opening day of voting for the 2015 awards.
  • Migrated the existing mobo.com website onto our Acquia Cloud Enterprise hosting environment.
  • Enabled single-sign-on between the two sites.

The site included:

  • A slick, modern interface for the voting function.
  • Artist bios
  • Video integration for nominated songs and videos
  • A streamlined registration and login process including Facebook & Twitter social logins.

Our Approach

Because of the timescales we had to implement some classic agile-esque techniques as well as solid project management process that provided enough rigour to deliver on-time while being flexible to rapidly evolving requirements:

Co-creation.  We sketched on paper and then spent a couple of days at the MOBO office, refining the concepts and actually designing the core templates together.

Communication.  Our entire team, across 4 locations used online tools to define, manage and track our delivery.

Development scrums.  We started development as soon as possible and held daily scrums to track progress and brief in next steps.
